Your Digital Influence: Is it Viral or Viral Marketing?

The Million People March and Miley Cyrus — two recent social media hypes showed us examples of viral marketing. It can be an idea that spreads and an idea that while it is spreading actually helps market your business or cause. Something being viral is not, in an of itself, viral marketing. Who cares that 60,000,000 people saw your self-made music video if it didn’t market you or your business in a tangible, useful way, it’s not viral marketing.

And according to Seth Godin, there are two kinds of viral marketing: The original classic sort in which the marketing is the product and which a self-amplifying cycle occurs. Hotmail, for example, or YouTube. The more people use them, the more people see them. The more people see them, the more people use them. The product or service must be something that improves once more people use it.

A second kind has evolved over the last few years, and that’s a marketing campaign that spreads and indirectly affects the product itself or personality himself/ herself.

Nowadays, marketers are obsessed with free media, and then, like me during my initial enthusiasm on digital marketing,  rushes in to get our share. We create content that is hampered or self serving or boring. Or we create something completely viral (or creative or catchy) but doesn’t do any marketing at all.

Building your digital influence online requires creating a brand identity and the right design that goes along with it.

The 2nd Digital Influencers Marketing Summit this September 21 at the SMX Convention Center aims to empower entrepreneurs, marketers, and advertisers with insights on working with influencers and brand advocates. Develop activities and advocacies that will take your brand image to a different level. Let your customers define what your product is for them, take ownership, rather than you dictating what you want it to be.

My session is about building your digital influence online by creating a brand identity and using the right design that goes along with it. I will share examples, practical tips, and guides that aspiring influencers can note of in the creation of their “influencer identity”.

So will it be a viral idea or viral marketing? Attend, learn and then you decide.
